When rats have fun

"Adolescent rats are more likely than adults to be attracted by cannabis - and seem more susceptible to the drug's effects on memory," New Scientist magazine reports. "Over a period of 18 days, Iain McGregor at the University of Sydney, Australia, and colleagues injected rats with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis, at doses designed to mimic heavy cannabis use in humans. Two weeks after the final dose, the adult rats avoided the regions of the testing chamber where they had received injections, but the adolescents showed no such aversion. ... Also unlike the adults, the adolescents had lasting problems with short-term memory."

When it comes to sex, the analogies between rats and humans are "profound," James Pfaus of Montreal's Concordia University told The New York Times. "It's not simply instinctual for them," he said. "Rats know what good sex is and what bad sex is. And when they have
reason to anticipate great sex, they give you every indication they're looking forward to it. ... The good thing about rats is, they don't lie."
